Home safety advice for a Merry Christmas

East KilbrideStatistics show at times of increased stress, abnormal routines and distractions there are more accidents in the home.

And the festive season is the prime time when all of these factors come together to impact on our daily lives.

But, with just a few simple safety steps, you can enjoy a safe and happy Christmas.

That's the advice from the council's Home Safety Officer Margaret Brunton who has compiled a checklist of dos and don'ts:

Use proper step ladders when putting up and taking down decorations - especially if you still need to stretch or climb. And don't overreach - a few seconds spent moving the step ladders could prevent a painful fall and avoid Christmas Dinner in hospital.

Overloaded sockets with Christmas tree lights and other extra electrical items can lead to fires

Christmas Day - discarded wrapping paper is not only a fire hazard but can also create slipping and tripping hazards as can the many presents which are scattered around can be a tripping hazard

Toys falling into the hands of a child who is younger than the recommended age group can result in potential injuries - especially if small parts are swallowed.

In the kitchen - make time and a little extra effort to keep worktops and cookers tidy. Ensure that hot, heavy or sharp objects are well back from the edges or with handles turned in so that they do not overhang.

Margaret said: "Just a little extra thought and organisation can reduce the risks of accidents significantly, leading to what I hope will be a very Merry Christmas for all."
